This drum has already been on a little life journey. Born first on 19 October 2025, at 16.22pm this soulful drum was initially strung too loose. Horatio found a home, but the original connection was lost due to the drum being too loose.
On return to me, I connected to the drum, and asked what it would like to happen, so together we chose to re-string. At this point in time I was not aware of any name for the drum. I re-stung him in a beautiful unwinding ceremony, followed by a re-stringing. It was such a gentle process, full of love and careful holding. We chose to keep the same crystal and used ALL of the same hide and strings, every section of the original hide was saved and included. The re-birth took place on 16.01.26 at 15:45PM. Interestingly when I wrote the date and time down I actually wrote 16.03.26 which at first glance appears to be a mistake but now I know his name, I'm noting this here in case it becomes later relevant.
I then re-crafted the drum beater; again I used the same hide, stick and filling. I just replaced the suede material of the beater head.
I've just taken some images and as I came to my computer to list here, I asked ' Sooo what am I...' and before I could finish the words in my heart I heard 'Horatio'. I've just looked up the meaning of the name Horatio and discovered that this a masculine name derived from Latin to mean 'Man of Time' or 'Time Keeper'. As this drum has already been born in two time portals and there may be a third point in time of some future relevance I am thrilled and smiling from ear to ear!
Drums made with hide that still hold hair create a very different sound, more 'muffled', less crisp or resonant. I find them deeply comforting. Powerful yet soft....
PLEASE NOTE: there is a small patch in the south direction of this drum just as the hide curves over the edge of the hoop, where the hair has come away slightly. A little bald patch that has been there from the begining. It occurred naturally during the rawhide preparation process. Gentlemen can be very sensitive about hair loss so please bear this in mind when connecting ;-)
